IGD Toolkit

The Inter-Generational Dialogues (IGDs) are a platform where young people together with their decision-makers dialogue on their aspirations for what a better world should look like; where they can share their concerns about peace and development, and offer solutions to these challenges.

Working through young people across the world and with governments, inter-governmental agencies, the private sector and civil society partners; Global Peace coordinated 25 IGDs during 2019.

In 2020, Global Peace will convene 75 IGDs in cities across the world as part of the UN’s 75th anniversary initiatives. UN75 recognises that in a world of dramatic and complex challenges, from the climate crisis to population shifts to the unknown course of technology, we need collective action more than ever before. In collaboration with UN75, we want to spark a conversation across the world on the role of global cooperation in building a better world together.

After collecting inputs and conducting analysis on the IGDs, Global Peace will collate its findings into a Global Peace Charter to be presented to the UN.

The findings from the IGDs will also be submitted to UN75 to form a part of their feedback which will be presented at a high-level meeting of Heads of State and Government in New York on 21 September 2020 dedicated to the UN’s 75th anniversary.

Dialogue Format

Is an event that runs for approximately 2-3 hours, with time allocated for:
1. Introduction of the Panel of speakers;
2. MY World Survey;
3. Brief Facilitated Discussion; and
4. Questions and Answers in Plenary.
Take place at a venue like a City/University/School or Community Hall.
Should have a minimum number of 50 attendees.
Should be sponsored or have funds raised locally.
To be live streamed, if possible.
Be documented with videos and photos, these to be shared with the Global Peace Secretariat.

Audience Composition

The dialogue should focus on drawing an inter-generational audience, as well as a cross section of various stakeholder groups including, but not limited to:

Young people;
City government representatives;
Academics;
Representatives from the private sector, including business associations;
Traditional and Faith based leaders;
Media; and
Civil Society Organizations.

Facilitator Criteria

The facilitator performs, what can be considered, one of the most essential roles in the IGD. They will be responsible for managing the flow and quality of the discussion. Individuals such as journalists, local radio presenters, and TV personalities make engaging facilitators.

Functions

Facilitate introduction of speakers in the IGD; set the scene for the purpose of the IGD; the value of the audience participation and its impact.
Manage time and manage speakers to ensure inclusive participation.
The focus of the IGD is the plenary question and answer session. The facilitator should therefore keep the speaker’s comments brief and encourage maximum audience engagement and robust discussion.
Provide a brief summary of the IGD at its conclusion.

Speakers Criteria

The panel of speakers will consist of representatives from Youth, Private Sector, Academia and Government. The selection of speakers should be based on the following:

Diversity with factors such as age, gender, experience, and expertise being given due consideration.
Speakers’ contributions and expertise should be on global issues.
The speakers must be citizens of the country in which the IGD is taking place, and can be invited from different cities and rural communities;
Speakers should be charismatic.

Post Dialogue

Your feedback is important as it will amplify voices, inspire action & generate more ideas and solutions. Each IGD is an opportunity for more young leaders to be involved and take action.

The following tasks need to be completed after your IGD:

Share files of photos and the recording of the dialogue with the Global Peace Secretariat.
A short news item on your event for us to publicise.
Upload the main findings and recommendations from your IGD to the Global Peace website.

IGD Survey

Global Peace is promoting the SDG Action Campaign’s MY World Survey at the IGDs to encourage greater consensus and understanding on development challenges we face.

The IGD speakers and participants are encouraged to take the survey at www.igdsurvey.org.

Alternatively, the Global Peace Secretariat is able to provide an offline version of the survey, which can then be uploaded at a later stage.
