PROTECTING OUR BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY

22nd May 2026

Building a Better World Through Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development

The International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated worldwide on 22nd May every year. The day was proclaimed by the United Nations to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity and to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity on 22nd May 1992.

Biodiversity refers to the variety of all living things on Earth – plants, animals, microorganisms, ecosystems, and the genetic diversity within species. It is the foundation that sustains life. Our food, clean air, fresh water, medicines, clothing, shelter, and climate stability all depend on healthy biodiversity. Yet, according to the United Nations, biodiversity is declining faster than at any time in human history. Over one million species are at risk of extinction due to human activities such as deforestation, pollution, habitat destruction, climate change, and unsustainable consumption.

The theme for 2026, “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development,” is drawn from the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework which envisions humanity living in harmony with nature by 2050. The theme emphasizes that protecting nature is not a choice, but a necessity for human survival, peace, and sustainable development.

The Link Between Biodiversity and Peace

At first glance, biodiversity and peace may seem like two separate issues. In reality, they are deeply connected. When biodiversity is destroyed, livelihoods collapse. Farmers lose fertile soil, fishermen lose fish stocks, communities lose water sources, and families lose food security. This scarcity drives competition, migration, poverty, and ultimately conflict.

Conversely, when biodiversity is protected and sustainably managed, it promotes prosperity, stability, and peace. Healthy ecosystems provide jobs in agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and forestry. They strengthen community resilience against climate shocks and foster cooperation over shared natural resources. Therefore, conserving biodiversity is an investment in peace.

Contributions of Global Peace to Biodiversity Protection

Global Peace with its motto “Working Together for a Better World,” has recognized this critical link and integrated environmental action into its global peace development

Environmental Peacebuilding

Global Peace promotes the idea that environmental conservation is peacebuilding. It advocates that transboundary cooperation on rivers, forests, and wildlife can prevent conflicts and build trust between communities and nations. Its campaigns highlight that sharing nature responsibly builds peace.

Youth Mobilization and Leadership

Through its flagship initiative, the Global Peace Chain, and its network of Peace Ambassadors across over 100 countries, Global Peace mobilizes young people for concrete biodiversity actions. This includes tree planting campaigns, mangrove restoration, beach clean-ups, urban gardening, and awareness drives in schools and universities. Youth trained by Global Peace become biodiversity champions in their local communities.

Community-Based Conservation

Global Peace works with local communities to promote sustainable practices that protect biodiversity while improving livelihoods. This includes promoting sustainable agriculture, reducing plastic pollution, protecting pollinators like bees, and encouraging the planting of indigenous trees that restore local ecosystems.

Interfaith and Intercultural Harmony for Nature

Global Peace brings together people of all faiths and cultures under the shared value of stewardship of the Earth. Almost all religious traditions teach respect for nature. Global Peace leverages this common ground to organize interfaith environmental dialogues, joint tree planting by different religious groups, and protection of sacred groves and natural heritage sites.

Digital Advocacy and Global Awareness

Through its online platform www.globalpeace.me, Global Peace serves as a hub for environmental education and global campaigns. It uses social media, webinars, and storytelling to reach millions of people, sharing knowledge on biodiversity loss and inspiring action. Its digital peacebuilding model makes it possible for anyone, anywhere, to join the movement.

Alignment with Global Goals

Global Peace aligns its biodiversity work with the UN Sustainable Development Goals – particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). It argues that the 2030 Agenda cannot be achieved without protecting biodiversity and fostering peace.

A Shared Responsibility

The International Day for Biological Diversity on 22nd May is not just for environmentalists. It is for everyone. Every individual has a role to play. We can protect biodiversity by planting native species, reducing waste and plastic use, conserving water, choosing sustainable products, and educating others about the importance of nature.

As institutions and governments, we must invest in policies that protect ecosystems and promote sustainable development.

As global citizens, we must support movements like Global Peace that are bridging the gap between peace and environmental action.

In conclusion, we cannot have peace without a healthy planet, and we cannot have a healthy planet without peace. Protecting biological diversity is protecting life itself. Let us use this 2026 celebration to renew our commitment to live in harmony with nature, because investing in biodiversity is investing in peace – for everyone, everywhere, every day.
